Know Your Man Promises

I, _____, take you ______, to be my wedded spouse. To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, ’till death do us part.

The longest sentence known to man: “I do.”

Have you ever questioned yourself why would anyone make a promise this big in his/her wedding day, knowing very well that we are human beings and that keeping it for life is an insurmountable task? Now, there are couples who have kept this and other promises, and I rejoice for them. For most of us, though, this is quite an impossible task, even when we truly strive to keep them.

We all have our limitations and some promises will not be kept, no matter how hard we try. Please, understand that he may promise you something just to get you off his back, and then, God forbid, when he sees that he has broken it, he might have to lie in order not to hurt you. Now, some of promises are more easily kept than others, but better be safe than sorry and never ask him to make any.

The thing with promises is that in a way, they demand a certain change of attitude, belief or behavior, and we know very well that changes need to come from within to truly work. If not, a person would not have to make a promise in the first place.

How many times a week do we break our promises? Can we truly say we are failing every time we do so? For example, every week, you promise you will exercise and every week you break my promise (some exceptions apply). And so it happens with thousands other things. This is just like our New Year’s resolutions; let’s just forget about them.

A Word of Advice
Ladies: Just don’t make them promise they will do something when you know perfectly well that it might be very difficult for them to keep it.

Gents: Don’t make any promises. Just be honest enough to realize you will work to keep your honor. And have her do the same.
